Jabir ibn ʿAbdillah (may Allah be pleased with them) said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us istikhara in all matters, just as he taught us a chapter of the Quran. He would say: “If one of you is considering a matter, let him pray two voluntary units of prayer, then say: ‘O Allah, I ask You to guide me by Your knowledge, I ask You for ability by Your power and I ask You of Your great bounty. For You are able and I am not, You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter (he names his need) is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair (or: in the near and the distant future), then decree it for me, make it easy for me and then bless me in it. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair (or: in the near and the distant future), then turn it away from me, turn me away from it and decree for me the good wherever it may be, then make me content with it.’” One who consults the Creator, takes counsel from the believers and stays firm in his decision will not regret it: Allah the Most High has said: “Consult them in the matter; then, when you have decided, put your trust in Allah.”
